Inspirational Travel Writing

To contact us Click HERE
For some lucky writers, there's a career in writing travel articles or more extended non-fiction books on the subject of other countries and cultures. It sounds like a brilliant way to make a living while indulging your passion for seeing as much as possible of this wonderful planet of ours. Online, as well as in magazine and book form, there are many great spots where writers can enthuse on the destinations that make them feel alive and inspired. No doubt the authors listed below would have embraced the internet when they began to explore the world, if only it had been invented in time!
Graham Greene
Greene was a prolific traveller who covered much of the world, resulting in numerous books and travel articles. He took a philosophical approach to visiting far flung places and his experiences led to him being recruited by MI6. His earliest piece of this kind of writing was entitled 'Journey Without Maps.' Greene embarked on the trip with a certain romance, helped not least by the fact that Liberia (the country he was visiting) wasn't mapped at the time - indeed, the fact that the US government map at the time included a large white space in the interior marked with the word 'cannibals' was probably a fascinating drawcard. Greene's journey took the form of a 350 mile, four week walk through the country's interior. Greene was exploring the country alongside his cousin Barbara who also wrote 'Too Late to Turn Back', and modern readers are often incredibly impressed by the amount of agreement and lack of contradiction between the two.
Ryszard Kapuscinski
The Don of literary reportage, Kapuscinski's travel articles have become respected by readers around the world. Born into poverty in modern day Belarus, Kapuscinski has become one of the most respected Polish writers in the world. Famed for his complex narrative techniques, Kapuscinski's writing helped to elevate this genre from the 1960s onwards. His works covered places as diverse as Ethiopia, in 'The Emperor', Iran and the fall of its Shah in 'Shah of Shahs', and the last days of the Soviet Union which he covered in 'Imperium'.
Bill Bryson
One of the most popular writers of books and travel articles working today, Bryson has penned a large number of bestsellers. Having lived a peripatetic live between his native United States and Europe, Bryson offers a wry and absorbingly anecdotal analysis of various parts of the world, a style that has become widely imitated.

Enjoying the Simple Joys of Rome

To contact us Click HERE
It might seem contradictory, but booking a Rome luxury hotel simply to spend time eating, drinking and walking around could be counted as among life's greatest luxuries. There's something about the Italian capital that makes even the simplest pleasures feel like they are among the world's greatest joys.
Life Is Larger
It's understandable. Rome is, after all, the city that gave rise to Michelangelo and many other masters - not just of painting and sculpture but many of the different arts and disciplines. One wonders whether it's something in the air that gets people thinking about how to elevate art, products, ideas and more to something greater. In fact, it won't be much of a surprise to find out your Rome luxury hotel is just a stone's throw away from where many of those great minds lived in the course of their lifetime.
Any guidebook or tourist pamphlet can give you itineraries and directions to attractions as well as how to get there from your Rome luxury hotel, and that's well and good. But true luxury isn't regimented, and among the greatest indulgences on a holiday is to enjoy those simple yet precious delights, your own way. Food is most certainly one of them. Here are just a few of those simple food pleasures you can enjoy.
Pizza. Fancy dinners at gourmet restaurants in and around one's Rome luxury hotel are practically givens on a Roman holiday, but no visit to the Italian capital is complete without having savoured an authentic pizza - the kind with crunchy, thin, hand-tossed crusts and baked in an authentic wood-fired oven. So, where to find authentic Pizza Romana? There is a consensus that the Testaccio pillar called Remo, on Piazza Santa Maria Liberatrice, is your best bet. The Aventino-Testaccio neighbourhoods are known for their wealth of traditional Roman cuisine, so for authentic fare that's more than just pizza, visiting these areas may prove helpful.
Chocolate. With the many masterpieces one can find around a Rome luxury hotel it won't be surprising to find a few in the form of chocolate! Ranking high in the Romans' favourite indulgences, there are many chocolate shops and cafés in and around the different piazzas. Their handmade chocolate fare ranges from the simple to the gourmet.
Ice Cream. Gelato is definitely one of the simplest, yet most fabulous treats one can have - and there's a gelateria around the corner from every Rome luxury hotel. Practically every street and piazza is home to wonderful artisanal gelaterias - there are many favourites, but Il Gelato di San Crispino's seasonal flavours come highly recommended by many.
Bohemian Chic Fare. For a different kind of indulgence, check out the bars and restaurants at Il Pigneto east of Porta Maggiore, for food and drink in an arty, avante-garde setting. The slow food at Primo is particularly interesting.
But Wait, There's More!
Eating is just one of the many simple pleasures awaiting holidaymakers to Italy's capital. There are so many things to see, do and enjoy - all it takes is a little walking around!

Little Bay, Montserrat - Future Real Estate Investment Opportunity
Little Bay, Montserrat

If you were to ask most people what they associate theCaribbean island of Montserrat with, they would probably tell you either thevolcano or AIR Studios. Luxury real estate would not be on most people's list.
However, having recently returned from a series of trips tothe island, we cannot emphasise enough that Montserrat property should be onthe property investor's radar.
After Beatles producer Sir George Martin established AIRStudios Montserrat in 1979, music stars from Paul McCartney and Elton John toSting and Eric Clapton came to record music on the island throughout the 70sand 80s. Many of these artists fell in love with Montserrat and returned yearafter year to enjoy the warmth and friendliness of the Montserratianpeople, the rugged beauty of the island and the peace and quiet away fromthe crowds. Some of these artists bought property there. They were soon accompaniedby some of the world's most well known families who could have bought property anywhere in the Caribbean, but chose to invest in realestate in Montserrat for the very same reasons.
The qualitites that attacted these buyers in the 70s and 80sremain: Montserrat's rugged beauty, friendly people, old fashioned values andand peace and quiet. In the words of so many property owners we met,"where else can you leave your door unlocked without fear?"
Some prospective buyers are concerned about the SoufriereHills Volcano, which continues to rumble away every now and then, but theGovernment's development plans are focussed on the North of the island, whichis naturally protected by Montserrat's Centre Hills and considered safe from volcanic activity. Moreover, Montserrat's volcano ismore closely observed by leading volcanologists than any other in the world.
We've been working very closely with the Government and theMontserrat Development Corporation on aspects of the planned new capital town at LittleBay and Carr's Bay and the exciting real estate investment opportunities whichare being planned - take a look at the Little Bay and Carr's Bay master plan. We'll update you on our activities in Montserrat very soon.

Interior Design: Caribbean Property's Changing Face

To contact us Click HERE

A fresh take on interior design is changing the face of Caribbean property across the region.
The following is an excerpt of an article on Interior Design in the Caribbean from The Caribbean Property Investor Magazine, featuring designers from across the region who have worked in Barbados, Jamaica, Antigua and London:
Grand Designs
Interior designthroughout the islands of the Caribbean is evolving. The dark colonial style isgiving way to a lighter, more contemporary feel.
“On Jamaica, the majority of interior designers have been trained in the USA and the UK bringingtogether an eclectic mix of styles.  Thecombination of the islands beauty, its rich culture and the number of businesspeople from abroad and professional Jamaicans who have decided to stay and makeJamaica their home has changed the face of interior design from a rustic Caribbeanand Spanish style to a sleeker cool contemporary look” says British interiordesigner Cleon Roberts, who works on the island.

Movingaway from the heavier, darker colonial style, today’s Caribbean designers seekto maximize the use of natural light and materials: “The Romanesque style usingcolumns and lion sculptures, small windows, masses of dark wood and heavydrapes is diminishing. People are opening up their homes, building roof gardensand terraces, and using natural and recycled materials,” Cleon adds.

TerriArcher, Interior Designer and Director at Archers Hall, Barbados, agrees: “We also see a preference for design that leans towards a moderninfluence yet still maintains the tropical ease and way of life. People havesteered away from the typical ‘plantation’ feel of monkeys and pineapples.”

Here's a brief excerpt from our interview

“I grew up on the Leeward Coast of St Vincent in the Buccament Valley. The natural setting granted us a unique freedom as kids; from bathing under waterfalls to helping the fishermen with their nets in return for a fish or two!” says Marlon, who is looking forward to a solo career after seven years as lead singer of the band Mattafix. “I am based in London now but I try and get home at least once or twice a year. It has become a refuge for me away from the chaos of the metropolis."

"My family and I moved to St Vincent from London when I was 9 years old and arriving there from the bleak backdrop of the UK was a surreal experience. The first thing I was struck by were the colours. From the deep greens of the rain forest to the oranges and purples of a breathtaking sunset. I'd never seen anything like it."

My favourite spot on the island is my home. We have a small open plan purple heart house surrounded by all the fruit trees you could ever need. Its a very hard place to leave!"

Montserrat's First Steps Towards Island Re-launch

Montserrat launches new brand

Montserrat begins its exciting new start with re-brand led by London-based leading Caribbean real estate and destination marketing specialists 7th Heaven Properties

July 2012: In the first step of its exciting re-launch and as plans for a new capital town and tourism drive gather pace, the Caribbean island of Montserrat has unveiled a new brand identity. With the new look soon to be rolled out both online and offline, this re-branding process has been led by luxury Caribbean real estate and destination marketing specialist 7th Heaven Properties who worked with a wide selection of local stakeholders to establish the island’s new identity.

The re-branding is the initial phase of a new high-end, low-density tourism strategy that aims to attract private sector investment into the new capital at Little Bay and to encourage visitors to the island.

British Overseas Territory Montserrat currently attracts a relatively small but dedicated number of overseas visitors. Montserrat entered the international spotlight when Beatles producer Sir George Martin opened the iconic AIR Studios in Montserrat in 1979 and music stars such as Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John, Sting and Eric Clapton came to record on the island. Many of these artists fell in love with Montserrat and returned year after year, some investing in holiday homes.

Through their research with local stakeholders and repeat visitors to Montserrat, 7th Heaven Properties identified that Montserrat’s appeal lies in its offer of tranquillity away from the crowds surrounded by warm, welcoming people and dramatic natural beauty; the new identity has been designed to reflect these assets.

In addition to the island as a whole, an identity for the new capital at Little Bay and port at Carr’s Bay has also been developed:

Little Bay, the new capital of Montserrat

The logo - which incorporates a Celtic Five Circle Symbol - takes inspiration from the surrounding natural beauty, the new capital’s role as a future port town and the island’s Irish heritage. Having been inhabited by Irish settlers in the 17th Century, Montserrat retains strong links with the Emerald Isle; St Patrick’s Day is a public holiday, the national colours are green and orange and Irish place names and family names are commonplace. Additionally, the interlocking circles reference the elements of nature, ever present in this stunning island, and represent the points of a compass.

The former capital and its port were destroyed by the island's volcano and the development of a new capital town and port in the North, an area protected from the volcano, are central to plans for Montserrat’s economic development. The Government of Montserrat believes the new identity and strapline "Relaxation Refined" will be fundamental to re-positioning the island, raising its profile and attracting private sector investors.

John Cox, Director of the Montserrat Development Corporation said:

"The Government of Montserrat is delighted with the new tourism identity for Montserrat. The branding reflects the islanders’ view of the tranquillity and friendliness to be found in Montserrat; essentially, the Caribbean as it should be: "Relaxation Refined". The new branding will help attract investments in tourism and other sectors."

Robert Cooper, Director of Branding at 7th Heaven Properties, which has been working very closely with the Montserrat Development Corporation on plans for the new capital town also commented:

"Outside the island, Montserrat is primarily known for its volcano and for AIR Studios. However, the primary reason repeat visitors continue to come back to Montserrat year in year out is because it offers total relaxation, peace and quiet against a backdrop of lush, green mountains and sensational sea views. The new branding reflects this unique offering."

Five Caribbean Homes fit for a Queen

To contact us Click HERE
This weekend marks the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen. Over 6 decades the Monarch has traversed the globe taking in a total of 116 different countries. As Head of the Commonwealth and Head of State for numerous Caribbean countries, many of these visits have been to British Overseas Territories and Commonwealth realms in the Caribbean, starting with Jamaica in 1953. Other members of the royal family have also spent a lot of time in the Caribbean on official visits. Earlier this year Prince Harry toured the Bahamas, Jamaica and Belize as part of the Diamond Jubilee tour, whilst Prince Edward and Princess Sophie spent two weeks visiting Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Grenada, Montserrat, St Kitts & Nevis, Anguilla and Antigua & Barbuda.

Royal visits to the Caribbean have certainly not been limited to official visits. Through its association with Princess Margaret, the private island of Mustique was renowned as a royal bolthole in the 60s and 70s. Princess Margaret built a home in Mustique on a 10 acre property gifted to her in 1960 by the island's owner, Lord Glenconner. The Queen and Prince Philip have also made a total of three private visits to Mustique over the years. Relishing the privacy that Mustique continues to offer today, the Middletons have taken a family holiday in Mustique every year for the last five years - this January they were joined by Prince William.

With the Diamond Jubilee celebrations set to begin this weekend, we felt it was appropriate to present five Caribbean homes fit for a Queen - one from each of the UK's Overseas Territories in the Caribbean.

The property market in St Kitts and Nevis has received a major boost over the last few years from the twin island nation's Citizenship by Investment Programme. According to Caribbean 360, the week before last, the Prime Minister Dr Denzil Douglas said that St Kitts and Nevis receives approximately 300 applications per year for Economic Citizenship from applicants in countries as diverse as China, the UAE, Russia, India and Singapore. The programme has appeal to high net worth Americans seeking to escape US taxes as much as to wealthy North African and Middle Eastern families looking to escape instability. According to a report by Reuters from February of this year, up to1,500 people are estimated to have obtained passports through the programme, the vast majority during the last 5 years.

The programme has boosted the property market because passports can be obtained either through an investment of $400,000 USD in real estate or a donation of $250,000 USD to the Sugar Industry Diversification Fund. The real estate option requires investing into one of several designated property developments in St Kitts or Nevis.

What exactly makes the St Kitts and Nevis Citizenship by Investment Programme so appealing? Full citizenship  offers the benefits of the right to reside in St Kitts and Nevis (or indeed any other CARICOM member country), visa free travel to over 120 countries worldwide (including Canada and the entire European Union) combined with no personal income tax in a safe and secure island. Applicants are also not required to renounce their existing citizenship. According to another Reuters report "Passports... for a Price", several other countries also offer citizenship by investment, including Dominica and Austria. Malta and Croatia are looking at introducing a similar scheme and other countries, such as the UK and Canada are looking at ways to attract wealthy individuals. However, the St Kitts and Nevis programme is the oldest of its kind and has built up a solid reputation.

Of course, St Kitts and Nevis also has far more to offer property buyers beyond a second passport and tax benefits. The islands offer truly friendly people, beautiful beaches, stunning mountains and fascinating historical attractions, including charming old plantation estates, ideal for a short visit or lunch. The islands recently beat the Seychelles, Fiji and Maui to third position in US News's ranking of Best Islands in the World. US News puts this down to the "authentic Caribbean experience" which St Kitts and Nevis offer, including golden-brown sands, ancient fortresses and fried conch.

7th Heaven Properties, the Caribbean property specialists, can introduce you to a very wide range of homes  and land for sale in both St Kitts and Nevis. During a recent visit to both islands we visited a number of property developments and were really impressed with the progress. Here is just a small selection of property for sale, all of which are eligible for the Economic Citizenship Programme.

Tips for Vacation Rental Owners

Joyce Copeland has graciously shared her April 9th blog article with us. If you own a vacation rental, you might want to use some of the ideas below that Joyce has picked up in her travels, reviewing vacation rentals. If you have some of your own personal touches to share with us please leave a comment.

5 Personal Touches I've Found in Vacation Rentals (Not Hotels)

When I'm not reviewing vacation rentals, I review boutique hotels all over the world.
I've been treated to lots of welcome baskets with wine, cheese, fresh fruit and chocolate.
But here are five really unique, personal welcomes I've received from owners of vacation homes that I've never received at any hotel. Anywhere.

1. A handwritten welcome note.
What a concept in an age of online conformations!
Which makes it even more heartwarming is knowing that someone took the time and effort to pick up a pen, address me by name and include a few details they thought would make my stay more enjoyable.
So simple. And not so rare in vacation rentals!

2. A disposable camera.
This is especially memorable because, as fate would have it, I ran out of disk space shortly after arriving at this vacation rental.
So the camera was a lifesaver. (Still wondering if the owner was clairvoyant.)
I saw a disposable camera in a hotel minibar once, and thought how cool! Until I saw the minibar price tag.)

3. A phone card for free long distance calling.
More and more vacation rental homes offer free unlimited long distance.
So why do hotels cling to their hefty surcharges? At one hotel I visited recently, it cost $1.25 just to pick up the receiver. Kidding! (But only a little.)

4. Specially blended rosebud and licorce tea.
I'm not a tea-drinker, but this family recipe was delicious -- not to mention fragrant and beautiful to look at. (And said to be good for my skin, too!)

5. Personal recommendations.
They're like gold to me. I'll admit I've gotten some gems at smaller hotels, where the owners rub shoulders with the guests.
But vacation rental owners are champs in this area. Exactly why I included "Owner's Favorites" in every home review. Check out the Owner's Favorite listed at the end of my review of Sanctuary by The Sea Pacific Grove. Permalink -- click for full blog post

Travel Implications After Mexico Swine Flu Outbreak

To contact us Click HERE
The following is a letter I received this morning from Alan Fox, Chairman and SEO of Vacations to Go.

Dear Ms. Roberts
A swine flu outbreak is dominating the news. The headlines are changing hourly but at the time of this writing it has been confirmed that this new strain of swine flu originated in Mexico and that Americans traveling in Mexico have returned to the U.S. infected with swine flu.

The U.S. Department of State has issued the following Travel Alert:

"
The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens of the health risks of travel to Mexico at this time due to an outbreak of H1N1 "swine flu." The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued an April 27 notice recommending that American citizens avoid all nonessential travel to Mexico at this time. CDC's notice also suggests precautions that travelers and U.S. citizen residents in Mexico can take to reduce their risk of infection while in Mexico. CDC provides recommendations for those who must travel to an area that has reported cases of swine flu, and recommends measures to take following return from an area that has reported cases of swine flu. The complete CDC notice can be found at the following link:
http://www.cdc.gov/travel/. Please check this site frequently for updates..."

As a result of this advisory and in an abundance of caution, major cruise lines that we represent have stopped calling on ports in Mexico and have developed--or are developing--positions with regard to future calls at ports in Mexico, while the outbreak lasts. We have been waiting for these official statements and I wanted to get them to you as quickly as they were available--hence the second newsletter this week. To see these cruise line announcements now, please click http://www.vacationstogo.com/swine_flu.cfm. If you are booked on a cruise that is scheduled to visit Mexico, you may want to check these statements on a regular basis. We will update this page every weekday with any new policies or changes. If you have additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your Vacations To Go cruise counselor. These itinerary changes disrupt the vacation plans of guests, cost the cruise lines money and deal a harsh blow to anyone in Mexico who relies on tourists for their livelihood. Indeed, there are no winners in the swine flu outbreak, but canceling port calls in Mexico was absolutely necessary to ensure the safety of every passenger and crewmember and to combat the spread of the influenza.I applaud the cruise lines for taking prompt and decisive action. No one knows how long this outbreak will take to run its course but I will be the first to announce the cruise lines' return to Mexico when the swine flu is behind us. That announcement can hardly come soon enough.

Vacation Rentals vs Hotels for Holiday Accommodation

8 Essential Reasons to Choose a Vacation Rental Over a Hotel
There is no doubt that staying in a hotel whilst on vacation can be the height of luxury and relaxation, but it can also offer regimentation and tension. You have to watch the clock to make the times for food; listen out for housekeeping; hand in your keys to reception every time you leave the building. Is this really relaxation? Maybe it is time you thought about renting a holiday home next time you go on vacation. Holiday homes are no longer wooden chalets on a self sufficient site, they offer varied standards of accommodation depending on your budget. They can provide high standards of comfort at lower prices, along with the additional benefits of privacy, freedom and the ability to choose your own meal times and food.
Do you need more reasons why you should choose a holiday home rental over a hotel for you next vacation, well here are some.
1. When renting a holiday apartment you will find you have a lot more privacy and freedom than you will ever get in a hotel room. The time is yours to do with what you want, no fixed meal times and no having to worry when housekeeping are going to turn up at your door.
2. Over the years the spread of the multi-national hotels all over the world means that all hotels are beginning to look the same. Regulation style rooms, Cable TV, staff wearing the same uniform; when you move about the hotel it would not matter if you were on the French Riviera or on the Moon, everything would be standard. A holiday rental apartment can offer you the experience of living exactly like the locals. If you want that extra bit of luxury then you have the option to choose a rental with a swimming pool or BBQ patio just for you and your family, can a hotel offer you that.
3. If you enjoy taking your vacation with friends or your extended family then staying in a holiday rental is the most practical option, everyone can share the costs as vacation rental apartments charge a flat fee for the apartment, it is not calculated by the number of occupants. Therefore, you save money on what you would spend on hotel rooms. That means more money to spend on enjoying yourself.
4. Are you taking children with you on holiday who are too old to share a room with each other or with you? Well a holiday rental means that you do not have to worry them being in another room, and all the going between the rooms to find out what is happening. Your holiday rental would be like a second home, everybody in one exclusive area but being able to enjoy their own space.
5. Most holiday apartments offer fully equipped kitchens. This gives you the freedom of choice on whether to eat in the apartment or go and sample the local cuisine. This can save a lot of money when you have the whole family to feed. In a hotel you are likely to end up paying for food you do not eat, because there will be the days, after a day in the sun on the beach, or walking around all the local attractions, you will not feel like making yourself look respectable in order to share a meal time with a hundred strangers eating food you do not feel like eating.
6. The best thing about vacation rental apartments is that you will feel like it is yours exclusively for the duration. You decide when and what you eat, you decide who you meet, who you share the pool with, it is all yours. But this does bring with it the day-to-day chores you find at home, but what better way to mix in with the whole ambience of the region you are in, meet the locals, buy local food from local shops, drink in local bars. This must be more appealing than the sterile atmosphere of a hotel.
7. When selecting your holiday apartment the options are endless, do you want a cottage or a castle, are you on a budget or are you looking for that luxury villa you always dream about.
8. Can't you just picture yourself now, walking out of your apartment, stepping onto your patio to sit by your pool with a glass of your local wine you bought and poured yourself? Can any holiday hotel offer you that?

Earlier this year we were really excited to be appointed to launch a new development of luxury, beachfront properties and a boutique hotel in Middle Caicos in the exquisite Turks & Caicos islands. We have visited the spectacular site in the island chain's largest (but least populated) island Middle Caicos several times, most recently this week. Each time I visit the site looks more beautiful. The almost pink sand is powder soft under foot and the sea is warm and crystal clear. Here's a snapshot of one of Middle Caicos's stunning beaches taken on our recent visit. We'll be releasing more news on this very rare opportunity to invest in beachfront Caribbean property very soon...

Caribbean Stars Sparkle at London 2012 - Congratulations!

Last night the spectacular Olympic Games came to an end. From start to finish this was a Games to be remembered - a Games filled with outstanding performances from athletes performing beyond their very best.

While the USA, China and Great Britain topped the medals table, tiny Grenada, with a population of just 110,000, won the most medals per capita. Kirani James took the country's first gold medal for the men's 400m, making his country proud. In fact, James became the first non-US athlete to run the 400m in under 44 seconds. The Spice Isle's Prime Minister declared a national holiday and named a street after him.

As Jamaica prepared to celebrate its 50th anniversary of independence, now legendary Usain Bolt became the first man to successfully defend both the 100 and 200m sprint titles in an Olympic Games and set a new world record in the 4x100m relay. In a triumphant triple win compatriots Yohan Blake and Warren Weir took silver and bronze in the 200m respectively. Team Jamaica takes home 12 medals in total.

Cuba won the most medals of all Caribbean islands, taking home 14 in total. La Isla Grande ranked 15th overall in the medal count.

With Trinidad & Tobago taking a gold for the javelin, the Dominican Republic winning the men's 400m hurdles and the Bahamas storming to victory in the 4x400m relay, the London 2012 has truly provided an opportunity for the Caribbean islands we love so much to shine brightly on the world stage.

It was not certainly not just about the medal winners either. Athletes from across the Caribbean proudly represented their nations and performed admirably.

Congratulations to all!
