When it comes to holidays and getaways, apart from visiting the top tourist attractions, you should definitely try to sample many of the local dishes the beautiful island of Sardinia has to offer.
Good food, wonderful wine and fresh produce-who could say no? Aside from stunning views and pristine beaches, this island is home to some of the most succulent and mouth-watering dishes in Italy. Its cuisine is distinct, different and delicious.
When staying in a villa in Sardinia, you will be within easy access of the extensive selection of bars and restaurants available to you. With this in mind, here is a lowdown on what signature Italian dishes you should order:
First, Some Pointers When Eating Out
• Not only do Italians differ when it comes to food choices, there are also some unique preferences and traditions that you should be aware of when wining and dining around this particular region.
• Italians in general do not eat or follow all meal courses listed on the menu, so feel free to mix and match.
• Meat and fish courses are often served plain with the lightest salad garnish on the side.
• Italians are known to take their time to savour their meals so be ready to spend over an hour or so eating. They also love a chat over lunch or dinner!
• If you have been used to the fast food culture, you may find the service considerably slower when dining here. However, most of the meals are definitely worth the wait so try to sit back, relax and enjoy the entire experience.
Must-Try Dishes
Antipasto
When it comes to antipasto on the island, you can look forward to being served salami, air-dried ham, olives and other bits and pieces. Typically, this fare is served with a famous local crispy bread called known as Pane Carrasau, which is a delightful accompaniment.
Pizza and Pasta
Of course, a holiday in a lovely hotel or villa in Sardinia will not be complete (or replete) with sampling some authentic Italian pizzas and pastas. Most restaurants on the island serve their pizzas following the traditional style of cooking, but there are restaurants that allow you to pick out the toppings you prefer. Ravioli is a traditional local favourite and it is usually filled with meat or fish.
Gelato and Sebada
To finish off your meal, instead of going for a puddings or cakes, why not take a wander to find a local gelateria before heading home to your villa in Sardinia. You can sample and choose from a wide selection of richly flavoured scoops of the famous Italian ice cream. However, if you do want to sample puddings, the Sebada, in particular, is highly recommended. This is a type of pastry that comes with a soft cheese filling and is deep-fried to perfection - an island specialty.
Souvenir Items
Before you pack up and leave your villa in Sardinia, stock up on local delicacies to take home with you - such as the Mirto jam or the liquor that is made from Myrtle berry, which happens to be the national plant of Sardinia!
