Whether it's for business or pleasure, to close a deal or do some skiing, snowboarding, climbing or just enjoying a relaxing family holiday, the first stop for many people coming to the Alps will be Geneva airport. Ski transfers are available from here to the many ski resorts in Switzerland and France (and indirectly, Italy), making it the perfect European Union hub, and a great starting point for many a traveller to Alpine Europe.
Being a major European Union hub (even though Switzerland is not a member of the European Union), the airport is always busy at any given time, leading to some inevitable confusion and delays. Here are a few things that may be useful for travellers to know about the Geneva airport, ski transfers, facilities and more.
Location
Situated just four kilometres (2.5 miles) from the city centre, Geneva airport ski transfers can whisk you to the city itself as well as the major Alpine resorts. With direct connections to motorways, bus lines and railways (the Swiss Federal Railways), getting to your destination from the airport is not a problem- as long as you manage to get through with your patience intact. The airport also has extensive convention facilities, so for some events, there may be no need to get out at all!
Facilities
The airport has two passenger terminals, T1 and T2, with T1 (known as Main terminal or M) divided into five piers- A, B, C, D and F. Pier A, as well as some gates of D are Schengen gates, which means that passengers boarding flights at those gates do not need to have their passports checked. Pier F with its two gates with jet bridges and four bus gates is the French sector and exclusively for the use of passengers going to or departing from French ski resorts or other French destinations. This means they can proceed from the arrivals without needing to pass Swiss customs and immigration - lucky them!
WI-FI and Phone Calls
The airport has free WI-FI access, which many travellers find very useful when coordinating their Geneva airport ski transfers, particularly if they have been arranged in advance. Given the tendency for confusion and delays in a terminal this size, having free internet access can prove very helpful in sorting out difficulties.
Using the free WI-FI in the airport is easy, but requires a working mobile phone- not necessarily a Swiss mobile, just as long as it can receive SMS. To be able to access the airport's free WI-FI, travellers can connect to the network labelled "Free_wifi_GVA", and open a browser with a log-on screen directing users to input a mobile number. A code will then be sent to that number. Upon keying in the code into the browser, the user will then have one hour of access. If access is required for more than one hour, the user will need to go through the process again.
Swissmobile also offers paid internet access, and phone calls can be made from public phones by credit card. But be aware that can end up a costly exercise.
